[Another Thursday night. The air was balmy and warm, blowing in salt scent from the ocean surrounding the small island they'd been confined to for over a month now. It would've been a peaceful, relaxing evening without all the murder that had happened over the last month. As it was, a low dread permeated the entire island complex. They'd all noticed it by now, the weirdly regular schedule that seemed to dominate the killings; sometime between sundown Thursday and early on Friday, someone took the Overseer's constantly standing offer of a way home.]
[Maybe this week would be different? The incentive they'd all been offered this week was almost laughable compared to some of those previous. Kill someone for a lifetime supply of snackfood half of them had never even heard of. It was like the Overseers were mocking them. But there was still a sense of doomed routine that Penny couldn't quite place, that tomorrow holding another body discovery, another investigation and trial, another vote and execution. The repetition was wearing on her.]
[But maybe this time patrolling at night would actually matter. So she had to try.]
[And thus is she walking not entirely aimlessly around the buildings on the island when she spots someone else.]
Ruby?
[Ruby's presence had been- complicated, at the least. Penny was definitely glad to have her friend here, to not be the only one from Remnant snatched up for this sick game, but as time wore on she worried more and more for Ruby's safety, the joy of her company tinged with guilt, like it was Penny's fault Ruby was here at all.]
You shouldn't be out alone, it might be dangerous.
Name: Ruby Rose | Title: The Wild Rose Age: 17 | Species: Dusty Human | Occupation: Huntress Likes: Cookies, Weapons, Comic Books. Dislikes: Grimm, Coffee, Lies. Traits: Energetic, Optimistic, Protective Trivia: Never actually graduated but got her G.E.D in Huntressing through job shadowing.
[The string of murders had become routine but that didn't necessarily make it something that sat well with Ruby. If possible she just wanted to make sure that everyone on this island was safe. The best way she felt she could do that was to make sure she was out and about during the most dangerous times possible. That way she had a chance of stopping whoever was out to do this and save the day. It never occurred to her for a moment that she could actually be the target.
Her grim patrol had turned into reading comics on a bench as the hours went on though, which was none the less interrupted when she heard Penny's voice.
Ruby's silver eyes brightened and she jumped up from her seat to great Penny with a hug. If she beat Penny to the punch it might involve less bruises.]
Penny! Relax. This is the kind of thing we've trained for, right?
[Oddly, tonight, she is in no mood to tackle anyone.]
[So there's probably a fifty percent chance Ruby's initiative saved her ribs here.]
Mm. Sort of, I guess.
[Stopping killers, protecting people. But the whole attitude of this place is so far removed from the kind of battlefield she's used to, she still feels uselessly out of her depth. The hug's pretty nice, at least. She holds Ruby tight until the other girl moves to break away.]
I just wish it felt like that mattered more, here.
[Normally Ruby might think that Penny not tackling her down was some sort of malfunction, but with the situation they were in she couldn't really blame her friend for a losing a spring in her step.
But if that was the case Ruby had to stay positive for the both of them.]
Okay, maybe not exactly what we trained for but the idea is the same.
[Eventually she'll break away but a hand will move up to hold on to her friends shoulder.]
Of course it matters. Whoevers behind this only wants you to feel that way. If anything it matters more than before.
[Ruby's smiling, that actually helps a lot? Penny can't help but smile a little in return.]
We should get some of the others involved. We could have some kind of codeword for when it's time to go. I mean, if we need them. I feel like when the Overseers show up in person it'll probably be pretty obvious.
Yeah. That's not a bad idea. We should scope out a few other people and meet up later to discuss it. I trust anyone that you trust but we should probably be on the same page with who we're telling before hand.
[She considers the options briefly.]
Maybe Beacon could be our code word? For old times sake?
Beacon's great! ...We should make sure it's being said by one of the people we've told, though, and not someone else just saying it in normal conversation for some reason.
That's true... That's another thing we'll have to figure out when we get there. No using the code word unless it's for official code word related business, right?
[She smiled. Glad Penny understood where she was going with this plan. She returned the squeeze in the most confident and understanding way she could manage.
It's not like this plan was going to get as confusing as team RWBYORNJQMPP.]
Yep. We can't be stopped as long as we stick it out.
[But she gratefully accepts the hug, wrapping her arms around Ruby and holding- well, not tightly, because for her that involves potential rib damage- but firmly.]
[The fact that Penny hasn't responded to her makes this definitely not fine.
When her grip loosens Ruby takes a step back to try and catch her breath.
She doesn't see the grab for her collar coming in the slightest and finds herself flipped into the air before landing hard on her back. She almost feels her aura break just from the impact.]
Penny! What the!?
[She's stunned by the throw but she's going to use everything she has in her to try and scuttle away.]
[Yeah, no actual response. Penny's just stalking after Ruby; stalk's a good word for it, too. It might take a second or two, but Ruby's probably familiar enough with Penny and her mannerisms to note that her gait and movement are all wrong. It's steady, focused. Totally disconnected from her flowing, dancelike movement in battle.]
[And, uh, speaking of which. Penny's swords, that have been completely disabled or absent since your arrival here? They're deploying into the air behind her as she advances.]
[Ruby has definitely caught on to the fact that there is something wrong with Penny here. The sudden attack. Her weird movements. Her weapons being drawn? All very terrifying signs that something has happened to her best friend.
She doesn't recover as quick as she'd like. The lack of an aura is something she blame on that. But when she does get enough sense in her she'll roll away from Penny and scramble up to her feet. Eyes darting around for something to take cover behind in case those swords come her way.]
[Penny- or whatever's controlling her- raises an arm into the air, bringing it down in a swift slashing motion that sends her swords spinning out at Ruby in a sharp arc.]

first meeting in a nebulous jamjar setting I guess?
[The storm blew in out of nowhere, rain suddenly cascading from the sky to rumbles of thunder. Fortunately, a shield could make do as an umbrella, in a pinch.]
[Even better, the wrecked city Steven had found himself in might not have running power or water or phone service, but it had plenty of abandoned buildings that offered at least a covered dry area until this passed.]
[Prying open a wedged-shut -or possibly even locked, at one point- door, he squeezed into a long-disused convenience store and took a few deep breaths of the stale air. His shield vanished in a small puff of sparkles. Steven paused, ruffling his hair to rid it of the rain that had made it past his shield.]
[And paused. Was that another clap of thunder, or something inside the store? A second of cautious rummaging in his bag produced a flashlight.]

[It's not a bad point, she thinks? Penny reaches up to rest a hand over the one on her shoulder.]
I'm- you don't deserve to be here. But I'm glad you are.
...Ruby I want to beat up the people behind this so much.
no subject
[One she's done with the supportive shoulder touch, she'll flip her hand and take Penny's, giving it a tight little squeeze.]
No, but neither do you either and we'll figure this out together.
Me too. POW! Right in the kisser.
no subject
[Like at least eighty percent of the time? Probably.]
[She gratefully takes Ruby's hand, letting them drop to their sides.]
Hee. Together, right? They can't hide forever, probably.
no subject
[She feels her smile widen a little when Penny takes her hand.]
Of course! They definitely can't. We'll show 'em what's what when they let their guard down.

[Time to be a really paranoid Batman, Ruby.]
...Do you think actual training drills would give it away too much?
no subject
[She's more an always prepared in ridiculous ways 60's batman, old chum.]
I think we can sneak in training but it might have to be with a couple people at time.
We'll figure something out and we'll do it together.

[This plan actually makes sense, but give it time; the longer it lasts, the more people are involved, the more anime it's inevitably going to get.]

Right. Together.

no subject
Well we have RP right now. I guess we're team Rupee at the moment?
[She will indulge this for the moment but they probably shouldn't have a team name.]
[Ruby appreciates the lack of rib crushing, just letting herself sink into the hug for the moment.]
no subject
[Yeah, she's just gonna hold the hug for a while. This is nice.]
[Maybe a little too long, actually.]
[Cause after a while it seems like she's just not letting go.]
[That's probably fine.]
no subject
But eventually her hands do let go of Penny and she starts to try and back away.]
Hey. Penny?
...Are you okay?
That's probably enough hugging now.
no subject
[By which we mean Penny is not letting go. Or responding at all.]
[This may be slightly less fine.]
no subject
Come on. I like a hug as much as the next girl, but this is getting kind of strange.
[She gives Penny's shoulders a bit of a shake. Doing okay there, bud?]
no subject
[In fact, she's releasing her grip on Ruby now.]
[And then making a grab at Ruby's collar to try flipping her into a rather impressive judo throw.]
[It's fine, obviously this is just that secret training they were talking about.]
