He had heard of a concept called 'Murphy's Law' since arriving in Deerington, and he recognized the concept from his time on the road with Ruby and her extended team. Anything that could go wrong did, in the worst possible way.
It was merely life alongside Qrow Branwen-- and had they remained in Remnant, Oscar could have dealt with the chaos that had descended upon their lives better. But, after Blake left, two people in their household lost limbs, and the entire house was destroyed... Oscar was starting to wonder if they weren't dealing with a case of Murphy's Revolving Door.
He was tired. At least they had Ozpin and his massive mansion to fall back on. The pets were safe, and they had recovered the most important of their belongings. Still, Oscar recognized danger when he saw it, and he knew that life would only get harder before it got better.
There wasn't time to wait anymore.
He had dealt with the crutches long enough that he could make it to Ruby's room with minimal frustration, and Oscar waved awkwardly once he caught her attention.
Ruby was still getting settled into the new house. She had managed to salvage some of her things from home and was trying to sort out what was going down to her new work shop and what was staying in her room.
It's pretty easy for her to hear Oscar coming from down the hall given the state he's in. She quickly sets down what she's doing and returns that wave with one of her own.
"Of course. What's going on?" She asks in a chipper tone, as though they hadn't lost their house in the last few days.
He was settling in as well as any of them could-- they were able to salvage what was important, but the fact remained that Oscar still had to leave his gardens behind. He could replant and rebuild, but that would take time. With summer quickly approaching, there wasn't a lot of spring left.
"Shortcake's taking it harder than me. He liked his stable. Uh... how about you?"
Ruby can't help but frown a little at that answer. She didn't really like the circumstances of the move herself and she couldn't help but feel a little responsible for what had happened. Or at least she knew getting Yang out of the house was more important than stopping the explosion itself.
"Yeah... It's a little rough on all of us. Sorry."
She approaches and runs her fingers along the back of Shortcakes mane. "It's gonna be okay. We'll make you a new stable in no time, promise."
Ruby glances back over to Oscar and gives a bit of a shrug.
"I mean it's going to take forever to sort out all the stuff from my workshop but it could be worse.
Sucks that Ange had to lose her place too. I guess I'm figuring things out."
Safety of family and team were far more important than making sure any physical belongings remained intact. Houses and their contents could be replaced, but there was only one Yang.
People could not be replaced.
Shortcake snuffled at Ruby, sticking his nose into her shorn hair and making it fly in different directions with his breath. Despite it all, Oscar chuckled.
"We're all together, and that's what counts,"
He said, casting his gaze between Ruby and the mess of boxes they had made of Oz's mansion. It was a good sight more comfortable than the austere green decor already.
"It's gonna take me a while to get my gardening supplies sorted. With the plot damaged, I need to start over. But, the season's early. We've got time.
"I'm thinking, though... maybe we can help each other? We can get everything done quicker if we do."
Ruby giggled feeling her hair get ruffled by the shortcake. She grinned and pushed his nose away from her before looking back to Oscar.
"Yeah. That's what I thought too. I'm just glad we're safe."
She gives a thoughtful little nod and as he describes the gardening situation and couldn't think of any argument there. hey still had the time to work on it. The next little bit gets a curiously little sparkle out of her eyes.
"Help each other out? I'm game. Why don't we start with your side of things... Which may mean getting my work shop up and going first." She says silver eye glancing down at where his leg should be.
It was impossible not to notice the words that remained unspoken-- and Oscar grinned in relief. Somehow, knowing that Ruby knew made his coming task that much easier.
"Yeah, you're right," He said, bashfully running a hand through his disheveled hair. "Ruby. I, uh... Could you help me put together a prosthesis? You're the best engineer I know, and I trust you."
Ruby had been seen a few people go through this enough times that she knew when someone was ready to start moving forward again, herself included now that she had lost her eye. She grins at the bash look and takes a step back.
"I'd love to- I don't think I'm the best at this around- but I've cobbled up enough know how to figure it out." She says rubbing at her arm nervously.
"But I'd love to- You deserve it after what... Well Salem put us through. I want that trust to be well earned."
"You're my big sis!" Oscar declared, grinning. "You don't need to earn anything-- you already have my trust."
She had from the beginning, the moment she had accepted him into the fold with only a few cursory questions and had chosen to guide him instead of judge him. Oscar reached for her hand, beaming.
"I've gotten some info, too. If we work together, maybe we can figure out the parts you're confused about. Either way, I'm sure it'll be perfect."
