[She didn't think much of it when she first said it but the thought thought does hit her like a ton of bricks. If she did go home would she remember to come back? None of her friends even realized she had been gone in the first place. She hadn't said anything to them.
Even if she did remember... She couldn't exactly abandon what she had going on at home. There was way too much at stake for her to do that. She felt herself deflate a little as the thoughts roll through her mind.
She lifted herself up off his lap for just a second, long enough for her to wrap her arms around his shoulders and pull him down so they were both laying down on the couch.
She couldn't promise that she'd come back and she didn't have the heart to say as much either. Instead she's just going to try and make the most what time she did have here.]
[He doesn't fight the contact, nor does he let awkward embarrassment take over. He doesn't even have to question the sudden move- he can make a pretty educated guess of what's running through her mind. Much the same as is running through his.
A small, rebellious thought that he could find a way to follow her home blooms in his head- but he knows he can't. He might be in a pretty terrible situation back home, but Rapunzel is relying on him. If he doesn't find that final incantation, Corona might very well be lost. He can't let himself become the reason for his homeland's downfall. Not again. And he could never ask her to give up what she's doing, either. She's too important for that.
All they really can do is appreciate the time they've got while they've got it. However long that might last. He moves an arm around her, curling into her a little as he lets out a slow breath. It's fine. ]
[She just grips him all the tighter once his arm comes around her. She knew they both had work to do at home. She wouldn't ask him to give up what he had to do and couldn't just give up on her home or friends either.
She understands that and she has a feeling he does too by the way he doesn't say anything back. It hurts. It makes her want to cry but she doesn't. Not when they were just enjoying such a nice moment. She'll lean in closer to his ear and her voice comes out as just a whisper.]
I love you. I really do.
[She just wanted to reinforce the important point of the day.]
[He remembers when he first got here and he thought the idea of getting this close to someone from another world was a stupid idea. That it was just setting yourself up for inevitable heartbreak. That'd he'd be smart about it and avoid it.
But then Ruby became such a vital part of his existence that he didn't realise he'd gone and done the very thing he'd sworn he wouldn't do. By the time he caught on to what was happening, it was already too late. For all his brains, he'd still stumbled headlong into this. Like a moron.
And yet, he can't find himself regretting it. Not even for a second. Not even knowing how inevitably it's going to end. Unlike most of his life choices thus far- this is one of the few things he would do the same all over again. Unhesitatingly. ]
[Ruby wasn't the kind of person to not try and get close to people. She had never been close to anyone quite like this though. It hurt knowing it was something that most certainly wouldn't last forever, but she didn't regret making the choice.
If Varian left and she was stuck here without him she'd still treasure the memories they had made. She hoped it would be the same for him if she were gone. She just wanted to think that if anything they had left behind at least little bit of good here. That it wasn't something that was just going to be forgotten some day.]
Than that's all that matters right now. As long as we're here. As long as we can.
[It's so much easier for Varian to keep people at arm's length. To keep pleasantries and not let anyone get too close. Even back home, it's only Rapunel's inner circle he really lets his guard down around. It's safer that way.
He'd hope he could focus on the good parts, but he also knows his penchant for wallowing in his all-consuming sadness. It... wouldn't be a good time for him, and he knows he's setting himself up for a lot more pain and heartache down the road. ...But he doesn't move. He doesn't wish differently. He'll take whatever comes from this. Still, that as long as we're here brings a sliver of pain in his heart. Man, this was gonna SUCK, one day. ]
...Yeah. You're right. We've just got to make it matter as long as this place lets us.
[He hasn't got as deep a wellspring of optimism to draw from as Ruby does, but he's trying.]
[She know he doesn't have the reserves of optimism she has. Which is why she really hopes if one of them were to return home, he'd be the one to go first. At least spare him from the pain of losing her like that when he had already come so far. She has no idea how she'll take it if it were to happen like that, but the self sacrificing part of herself thinks it would be better that way.]
[She really was good at the self sacrificing thing. It concerned him more than he liked to admit. Still, her attempt at breaking the tension works, as he lets out a soft huff of a laugh against her. ]
That's very true. I'm okay with staying here for a good long while.
[He'd have to come up with something pretty clever to get out out of there now. Ruby closes her eyes and let's her grip relax again. It was time to relax.]
[He's switching the big brain off for a while. Clever will have to come later. Now, well, now he's pretty content with nothing thinking of a whole lot at all. He hums softly, closing his own eyes, his breathing evening out a little. ]
Yeah. Pretty great comp'y.
[Look, he's perpetually tired and he can sleep on a box of rocks- in comparison, Ruby is considered a better option for sleeping on. ]

I know. I love you too, so much.

Mmhmmm...
Besides. It's kind of comfy like this right here.
[It was about time for a tension breaker here.]

That's very true. I'm okay with staying here for a good long while.

Sounds like a good excuse for a nap if that's the case.

[And yet he is not moving, that's for sure.]

[Are Ruby's arms tightening around him ever so slightly. Sure feels that way.]
You're free to try and escape if you want but I feel like you had to disable at least some of your booby traps to let me in.
no subject
Only a small amount. Minimal amount.
[That point made, his arm goes back around her. Because, yeah, he's not escaping. ]
I'll let you win the nap battle this time. Because I'm comfortable and this is nice.

I'll have to be more careful next time.
[He'd have to come up with something pretty clever to get out out of there now. Ruby closes her eyes and let's her grip relax again. It was time to relax.]
It is. Couldn't ask for better company.

Out of all the things they discussed one thing stood out in her mind. He said he loved her.]
